Summer Heat Alert: Holistic Medicine Sensitivity Warning
The Pharmacy Guild of Australia is issuing a critical reminder as the country swelters under extreme summer heat. With the potential for sunburn and heat-related illnesses on the rise, the Guild is urging Australians to be vigilant about the impact of their medications.
"This summer, we're seeing a heightened risk of sunburn and heat-related issues due to the intense heat," says National President, Professor Trent Twomey. "It's crucial that Australians take extra precautions, especially those who are taking medications."
Professor Twomey emphasizes the importance of reviewing and storing medications according to recommendations. "Community pharmacists are here to help. They can provide valuable advice on safe medication storage, identify potential heat or sun sensitivity issues, and offer guidance on managing dehydration, heat stress, or sunburn."
"Many people are unaware that common non-prescription medicines, such as painkillers and antihistamines, can affect your reaction to the sun," Professor Twomey explains. "Additionally, medications like antidepressants or ADHD medicine may reduce heat tolerance, increase dehydration, or slow down the body's cooling process."
While it's essential to continue taking these medications, Professor Twomey advises taking additional precautions in the heat and sun. "Don't let this knowledge scare you away from necessary medications. Instead, be proactive and take extra care in the sun."
"Community pharmacists are here to help during this extreme heat. A quick conversation about your medications could prevent a serious reaction," he adds. "We encourage everyone to stay hydrated, stay sun-safe, and seek advice early if you're unsure."
As the summer heat intensifies, the Pharmacy Guild of Australia reminds Australians to be mindful of the potential interactions between medications and the sun. By taking these precautions, we can enjoy the summer while staying healthy and safe.
