He proposed a shift in policy, suggesting, "Let’s modify the terms a bit. If the United States is going to safeguard the entire global missile defense framework—primarily for our own security, but others benefit too—we should certainly gain some advantages from this arrangement."
While Vance's comments hint at the potential value of Greenland's natural resources, such as rare earth minerals, uranium, and iron—which are becoming increasingly accessible due to melting ice driven by climate change—it remains unclear whether he was specifically referencing these assets. He remarked, "It’s amusing because Europeans are so accommodating in private, yet publicly they launch attacks against us."
